How Many Treats Should a Dog Have a Day?

Belcher · October 28, 2026
In shortThe rule of thumb used in veterinary nutrition guidance is that treats should make up no more than about 10% of daily calories. The other 90% should come from a complete diet to keep nutrition balanced — so on treat-heavy days, reduce the food slightly.

What is the 10% rule?

Most treats are rewards, not complete and balanced meals. When treats take up too much of the day, dogs eat less of their main food, nutrition gets unbalanced and weight creeps up. Keeping treats within 10% of daily calories is the common guideline.

Making it practical

  • Set aside the day's treats each morning and only give from that portion
  • Break training rewards into smaller pieces
  • Adjust the food on treat-heavy days
  • Check weight and body shape once a month

Exact daily calories depend on weight, age and activity, so dogs that need weight management should have targets set with a veterinarian.

Light, crunchy lung breaks into small pieces easily — good for frequent rewards within the daily limit.
