Is Horse Meat Safe for Dogs? A Guide to Horse Treats
In shortYes — properly dried, hygienically processed horse treats are a protein treat dogs can eat. Horse has long been used in pet food in Europe but is rare in most dog foods, which makes it a novel protein option for dogs sensitive to beef or chicken. Start with small amounts and supervise with hard cuts.
Why horse treats are getting attention
Most dog foods and treats rely on beef, chicken, duck and salmon. Horse is a different protein altogether, so for dogs with a suspected food allergy it is likely to be one they have never eaten. It is generally known as a lean red meat.
What to check before feeding
- One ingredient — no other meats or additives
- Fully dried — moisture properly removed
- Cut and size — jerky, liver and lung crumble crisply; hoof and rib are hard and need extra care
- First feeding — start small and check the stool
