How to Give Hard Chews Like Hooves and Ribs Safely
In shortHard chews like hoof and rib give dogs a long, satisfying chew, but they must be given under supervision and sized to your dog's mouth. Take them away once they get small enough to swallow, and choose crunchy treats for dogs with weak teeth, seniors and young puppies.
Five rules for safe chewing
- Always supervise — never leave your dog alone with a chew.
- Match the size — it should be too big to swallow whole.
- Remove small ends — take it away once it gets small.
- Set a time — around 10–15 minutes per session.
- Offer water — make sure your dog can drink afterwards.
Skip hard chews for
- Dogs with weak or treated teeth
- Dogs that gulp food
- Puppies under 3 months
For these dogs, lung or jerky that crumbles by hand is a better choice.
Belcher horse hoof and horse rib are hard cuts — extra supervision is needed.
